JazzYukon Workshops with Grant Simpson (click for more details)

#1: Introduction to Chords and Harmony: The study of songs and how chords are put together to
build interesting harmony. By the end of the 4 lessons, students will have gained an understanding of
complex harmony and chord progressions.

Tuesday Evenings: 6:30 – 7:45 p.m.

Classes start on January 8th to 29th, 2013

Cost: $80.00 per person

More Details: We will begin by learning the harmonized scale and how it works and continue by the
study of the harmonic structure of songs. We will end by creating your own advanced chord
progression.

All materials will be posted on line, including mp3 files and pdf files.

#2: Level 1 Chart Writing: Learning to Chart your music and prepare it for other musicians to
perform. By the end of 4 lessons students will be able to create basic charts that are easy to read and
understand for other musicians.

Tuesday Evenings: 8:00 – 9:15 p.m.

Classes start on January 8th – 29th, 2013

Cost: $80.00 per person

More Details: You will learn to write clean, easy to understand charts for you songs. We will also
learn how to transpose charts so your songs are ready for sax, trumpet and other instruments.

#3: Study of the Improvised Line: This will be a look at the creation of the improvised line. Learning
how the masters did it – to help you understand how you can do it too.

Wednesday Evenings: 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Classes start on January 9th – 30th

Cost: $80.00 per person

More Details: We will be looking at some of the great improvised solos in history and analyzing them
together (along with the chords). The study and understanding of these solos help you see what kind
of options are available to you when you are soloing yourself. Students will also be putting this
theory to work on their instruments.
