DESCRIPTION:I will be giving workshops for Yukon musicians as part of the JazzYukon Educational Program. \n#1: Introduction to Chords and Harmony:  The study of songs and how chords are put together to\nbuild interesting harmony. By the end of the 4 lessons\, students will have gained an understanding of\ncomplex harmony and chord progressions. \nTuesday Evenings:  6:30 – 7:45 p.m. \nClasses start on January 8th to 29th\, 2013 \nCost:  $80.00 per person \nMore Details:  We will begin by learning the harmonized scale and how it works and continue by the\nstudy of the harmonic structure of songs.  We will end by creating your own advanced chord\nprogression. \nAll materials will be posted on line\, including mp3 files and pdf files. \n#2: Level 1 Chart Writing:  Learning to Chart your music and prepare it for other musicians to\nperform. By the end of 4 lessons students will be able to create basic charts that are easy to read and\nunderstand for other musicians. \nTuesday Evenings:  8:00 – 9:15 p.m. \nClasses start on January 8th – 29th\, 2013 \nCost:  $80.00 per person \nMore Details:  You will learn to write clean\, easy to understand charts for you songs.  We will also\nlearn how to transpose charts so your songs are ready for sax\, trumpet and other instruments. \n#3: Study of the Improvised Line:  This will be a look at the creation of the improvised line. Learning\nhow the masters did it – to help you understand how you can do it too. \nWednesday Evenings:  6:30 – 8:00 p.m. \nClasses start on January 9th – 30th \nCost:  $80.00 per person \nMore Details:  We will be looking at some of the great improvised solos in history and analyzing them\ntogether (along with the chords).  The study and understanding of these solos help you see what kind\nof options are available to you when you are soloing yourself.  Students will also be putting this\ntheory to work on their instruments.

Please prepare two songs\, one upbeat\, one ballad in the style of the show (or from the show). We will have an accompanist (bring sheet music for your songs please). Sunday the 16th will be the dance call for all auditionees from 4-6pm (this will be a group dance audition). If you cannot be in town for the auditions\, please prepare a dvd (preferably with two songs and a dance example) and leave it at the Guild in advance. This is going to be fun! \nRehearsal dates: March 4\, 2013 – April 9\, 2013\nTues-Fri evenings and Sat/Sun 10-6pm\nPlease note: this will be a HUGE cast and a MASSIVE undertaking. DESCRIPTION:Grant Simpson\, Kate Weekes and Steve Slade will be hosting an ArtsCan Circle Information session and Film Screening of the wonderful documentary of Mike Stevens and the creation of ArtsCan Circle. \nThis is a wonderfully inspiring film and ArtsCan circle is doing stellar work in the Northern communities of Canada\, working with children and music.   \nThe Mike Stevens documentary “A Walk in my Dream” will be screened at the Old Fire Hall in Whitehorse on December 7th at 7:00 p.m. \nHere’s some more information:\nA Walk in my Dream features musician Mike Stevens\, who is probably the only harmonica player in the World to appear on the Grand Ol’ Opry stage more than 300 times; give himself eight hernias because of the way he plays; and be named Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky for his outstanding contribution to bluegrass music. Ten years ago\, at the top of his game\, Mike’s career took a sudden and drastic detour when he found himself face to face with a group of Labrador youth living in unimaginable conditions. His life would never be the same…and neither would theirs.  This event lead to Mike founding the ArtsCan Circle program linking creative artists with youth and providing workshops in the arts for Indigenous youth in isolated communities in the North.

Simpson’s background in jazz and vaudeville and Weekes’ love of nature\, travel and history\, combine to create tantalizing and sometimes hilarious original ditties. They’re perfectly fit for a night beneath the Yukon moon as the title of their 2011 recording indicates. Kate and Grant’s upbeat shows feature smart lyrics\, catchy melodies and arrangements that keep toes tapping! \nIn the fall of 2010 Kate and Grant toured to China\, bringing their unique brand of Yukon roots to the Nanjing Jazz and World Music Festival. They recorded and released their album”Beneath The Yukon Moon” in 2011 and followed it up with an extensive tour throughout Canada\, including a series of Home Routes shows. The recording has earned many approving nods from the critics\, and the duo continues to tour\, playing their individually and collaboratively penned tunes with a few traditional numbers. Originally from Nananimo BC\, he has been a professional musician for over thirty years\, and has released multiple acclaimed recordings\, both solo and with bands like New Orleans North.
